Swans landing in the field by our farm
It is Trumpeter Swan season again in Skagit valley. Our flower farm is perched on the top of the hill overlooking the beautiful valley. We can see flocks of swans grazing in the corn field each day. Like clockwork, every day just before sunset, several hundred swans fly down to the reservoir where they spend the night. They can be heard from quite a distance making their honking noises as the fly past.
Trumpeter swans are North America’s largest waterfowl and there story is remarkable. Every fall they make their pilgrimage from Russia across the Bearing Sea and into the mild Skagit valley of Washington state where they spend their winter. Less than twenty years ago, the trumpeter swan was close to extinction. They are living proof that human intervention can save some species. Now they have a healthy population and their unique call provides a nice soundtrack for winter.
