COSTA RICA WEDDING PLANNER

With the most stable government in all of Central America and tourism on the rise, Costa Rica has moved to the forefront of the destination wedding choices for many couples. This post is a brief overview of the country from a Costa Rica wedding planner perspective.

The Law
: Attaining a marriage license in Costa Rica is a relatively easy and painless process.  Costa Rica marriage license laws can be found here.

The Geography
: One thing that sets Costa Rica apart from other destination wedding locations is the diversity of its landscape. With a great variety of beaches, volcanoes, cloud forest and calm gulf waters, this country offers something for everyone.

The Lifestyle: The most common phrase that you will hear while travelling through Costa Rica is “pura vida” which translates to “the pure life”.  The beautiful people of this small country are considered to be some of the happiest people on earth. Their positive demeanor is absolutely contagious.

The Flowers
: Costa Rica provides the ideal growing environment for orchids. The country boasts over 1300 varieties of orchids alone. Combine this with birds of paradise, many varieties of ginger, heliconia and bromeliads and you have yourself a stunning and locally harvested bouquet. The great thing about tropical flowers is that, not only are they beautiful and vibrant, but they are also hardy, so the wedding flowers can be enjoyed throughout the entire trip.

As we continue to explore all that this beautiful country has to offer, we fall further and further in love with it as the perfect destination wedding location. For additional information about our travels throughout Costa Rica, please check out our

Costa Rica’s Central Pacific in Depth

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010
This post is part of our insider guide to Costa Rica section of our blog. In an effort to gain a greater handle on the ever changing landscape of Costa Rica, we have made several research trips throughout the country. This last trip takes us to the Central Pacific of Costa Rica, an area with lush rain forests, stunning beaches and abundant surf. Our trip started out in the town of Manuel Antonio.

Manuel Antonio- This town has been on the tourist radar for many years now, so during peak holiday travel it can become flooded with travelers.  Don’t, however, let this sway you from visiting the area. What brings people to this area are the gorgeous ocean views and the beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park. This protected stretch of coast land is home to hundreds of different species of birds, sloths and 3 types of monkeys. Since it is a mountainous coastline, the majority of accommodations are perched up high overlooking the Pacific ocean. Even though this area can get crowded, we consider it a must see if you are headed to Costa Rica’s central Pacific area.  It is the ideal location for honeymooners, families and backpackers alike. Accommodation Suggestions: Costa Verde and Buena Vista Villas.

Esterillos
-  Although the sleepy town of Esterillos is just off the busy route from Jaco to Manuel Antonio National Park, you wouldn’t know it when you are walking on the beach. Most travelers drive right past this idyllic stretch of tropical coastline. The area is divided into Esterillos Oeste (west) Esterillos Centro and Esterillos Este (east). Each area is separated by a nature rich estuary, but it is, otherwise, one long stretch of beautiful beach. We visited several beautiful villas while in the area and were quite impressed by the panoramic views and solid construction of many of them. There are also several beach front hotels to suit a wide range of budgets. If you are imagining Costa Rica as an untouched natural wonderland with pristine beaches, then this town would make a great location for your next trip. It is truly unspoiled and not touristy, which is exactly what we love about it. It has great surf too! Accommodation Suggestions: Xandari, Encantada and Casa Exotica

Playa Hermosa- This world renowned surf spot attracts hardcore surfers from around the world. Known for its wave consistency and hollowness, Playa Hermosa is the perfect place to go for the active traveler that can handle advanced surf. This black sands beach is situated just 6 miles south of Jaco, but has a distinctly different flavor. It is considerably smaller than Jaco and mainly composed of beach side hotels and restaurants. Accommodation Suggestion: Backyard Hotel

Jaco- Located just 1 hour from San Jose’s Sanatamaria International Airport, it represents the closest beach stop for many city dwellers who are looking for a weekend getaway.  In the last 5 years or so, the town has experienced substantial growth with the addition of many new businesses and condo developments. Unfortunately, there are few zoning measures in this area and the new growth lacks any uniformity. Businesses use gaudy sign-age to attract the attention of would be customers and the result is rather hodge podge . What Jaco lacks in aesthetic and charm, it makes up for in amazing crafts and great bargains. We have found the best and most affordable souvenirs in this coastal town. If you are looking for something special to take home to loved ones, Jaco would make a great afternoon stop. Accommodation Suggestion: Doce Lunas

Signature Destination Wedding Gift

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

One of our friends in Costa Rica is the artist responsible for the hand carved signs found on most businesses in the beach town of Playa Tamarindo. The other day, he came over and presented a sign that he made for us as a gift. We were so thrilled that we put it up directly in the entryway to our office. After spending a few days admiring it, a light bulb went off. We have found the perfect personalized destination wedding gift. If you are a wedding guest looking for a signature gift for the wedding couple, then look no further. This would also make a great gift for the wedding party. How cool would it be to send your wedding guests home with an exotic wood memento from your destination wedding. For a personal touch, you could have the artist inscribe a special thank you message on the back of each sign.

Like many small businesses throughout Costa Rica, our friend Greivin Quiros Obando doesn’t have a website. If you are interested in having him create a custom sign for your event, please contact us at info@fourwindsweddings.com and we will forward your inquiry to him.

Top 5 Costa Rica Honeymoon Destinations

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Our job as destination wedding planners tends to exceed the act of simply planning and orchestrating the actual event. We are our clients eyes and ears on the ground in Costa Rica and this is a job that we take very seriously. In an effort to become a complete resource for our clients, we constantly travel the country to uncover the most beautiful and romantic honeymoon locations. We tend to prefer smaller and more intimate hotels ourselves, which is reflected in our selections. Here are our top five.

1.) Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort:
When we visited this hotel it really struck us as a the perfect first honeymoon stop in Costa Rica. The rooms are all well appointed with all of the luxury amenities of a 5 star hotel including a large Jacuzzi soaking tub, quality king sized bed and gorgeous furnishings. What really sets this hotel apart from others, however, is its location. As you might gather from its name, Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort contains some of the most gorgeous hot springs on the planet. The resort is situated in the shadow of Arenal Volcano. Arenal is one of the 10 most active volcanos in the world. On a clear night, the volcano can be seen spewing fire and ash from its crater.

2.) Los Altos de Eros Luxury Inn and Spa:
If you have been a follower of our blog in the past, you will know that we are big fans of this small hotel (check out our previous blog post). Los Altos de Eros is unique in that it is located high up in the hills, overlooking the Guanacaste countryside and pacific ocean in the distance. With its location, the owners of the hotel have struck a balance between complete serenity and close proximity to surrounding tourist hotspots like Playa Tamarindo and Avellanas. They have several full time drivers on staff that will take you from the hotel to the destination of your choice. Spa de Eros is an opened air, but completely private area that allows for ultimate relaxation. We highly recommend the couples spa package, which includes your choice of three spa treatments and a delicious lunch.

3.) Ylang Ylang Beach Resort:
This beach front hotel is actually comprised of several private stucco bungalows and is located in Montezuma, one of our favorite towns in Costa Rica. The resort has gorgeous manicured tropical gardens with paths that lead guests from the main facilities to the individual bungalows. The town of Montezuma is charmingly small with several restaurants and shops throughout. One of the largest attractions to this area besides the beaches are the Montezuma waterfalls. Located walking distance from town, these falls are a must see for cliff divers and nature lovers alike.

4.) Hotel Capitan Suizo:
Located on the more private south end of Playa Tamarindo, the impeccably manicured grounds of this hotel are a jungle oasis in an area surrounded by dry forrest. Howler monkeys, flocks of birds and curious iguanas call this small sanctuary home. Capitan Suizo is a swiss owned boutique hotel with arguably one of the best beachside pools in all of Tamarindo. The honeymoon bungalow is tucked away on one of the many winding paths that line the grounds. It has a spacious living space with a patio that faces the ocean, a large Jacuzzi soaking tub and a very comfortable bed. Every friday night (from December to May), Capitan Suizo hosts a beach side barbeque where guests can feast on a large assortment tasty food. After dinner, everyone is treated to the traditional dance and music of the Guanacaste. There is a marimba band that plays throughout the evening.

5.) Hotel Punta Isleta:
Located in the decidedly less touristy area of Samara, this beautiful hotel provides all the privacy that one might want in honeymoon destination. We recommend staying in one of the casitas (spanish for little house). Each casita is beautifully furnished with rustic, but elegant furniture. Step outside and you will discover a private patio and plunge pool where sunbathing and general relaxing can take place. What is unique about this property is that, while it is perched in the hills overlooking Samara bay, the hotel also has a beachside facility with an amazing pool, swim up bar, private lounge area and a casual restaurant. This hotel truly captures the best of both worlds!

A Glimpse into the World of Villas

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Costa Rica is blessed with beautiful beaches, tropical rainforest, amazing mountain cloud forest and some incredibly lavish villas. Most people would probably be surprised at how affordable a luxury villa can be when you break it down to the cost per person. We have found bargains for $50 per person/night.

The beauty of renting a villa as a wedding or reception location is that you can create a completely custom decorated space. The chef, music and photography is all curtailed to the wedding vision of the bride and groom.  Depending on group size, many of these villas will provide plenty of room for your guests as well.

The typical amenities that come with the villa rental are daily maid service, 24 hour security and private concierge. Additional services like private chef and catering, airport pickup/drop-off and personal driver can be arranged as well. There are several websites out there that work exclusively with villa rentals on a large scale. Here are some of the websites that we use to find and secure villas for our clients. Craigslist Costa Rica is a great resource for finding privately listed homes. VRBO is another site that we use. It has the largest international database of villas. Villas Caribe typically has a different offering of private homes and it specializes in tropical caribbean locations. With a little research, you can uncover a villa that fits your budget and your tropical wedding vision.

Amazing Destinations: Arenal, Costa Rica

Monday, February 15th, 2010

The Four Winds team has just returned from a tour of the Arenal area of Costa Rica. If you aren’t familiar with Arenal, it is one of the 10 most active volcanos in the world.  Located in the northern Guanacaste province of Costa Rica , this area offers tremendous hot springs, 5 star accommodations, a great variety of restaurants and some amazing tours that range from jungle adventures to high speed zip lines.

Our first stop was to La Ceiba Tree Lodge, a small Swiss owned hotel that overlooks Lake Arenal. What sets this 5 room lodge apart from the rest is that it sits in the shadow of a 500 year old Ceiba tree. The pure size and beauty of this tree is really magical. For anyone who has seen the movie Avatar, this is the closest thing to the tree of life that you will find on this planet. A wedding underneath it would be truly breathtaking. Each room has an outdoor lounge area with a hammock, where you can watch the sun set over the Lake Arenal.

After La Ceiba Tree, we were off to play in the hot springs of Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort. This 5 star resort has some of the most amazing thermal pools in the world. The spa has over 30 pools ranging from 108 degrees to 50 degrees. Most of the pools are natural looking, but they do have several hardscape style pools and a water-slide. On a clear day, Arenal can be seen spewing ash and lava from one of the upper pools at the Spa. As for accommodations, we stayed in a garden suite and were pleased with the size of room and quality of bed. We didn’t spend very much time in the rooms, however. Most of our tour was spent exploring the sights of this beautiful nature wonderland that is Arenal. If you have plans to visit Costa Rica, we would strongly suggest incorporating a few days in Arenal and the nearby town of La Fortuna.

The Height of Luxury

We were delighted when we received a gracious email from Jacqueline of Los Altos de Eros inviting us to take a tour of their luxury inn and spa. We had read so many great things about the property on tripadvisor. The english translation for Los Alto de Eros is “The Height of Love”. The 5 room Inn is perched high on one of the coastal hilltops just outside of Tamarindo, Costa Rica and has a stunning view overlooking the hills and the ocean in the distance. Although it is a small Inn with a capacity of 10 guests, it has a staff of 28. This ensures that guests receive the highest level of service possible.

As we were led down to the spa, we were taken aback by the stunning view of the Costa Rican landscape. The opened air lobby of the inn is beautifully decorated with carved sculptures and tropical inspired artwork. The blue tile infinity pool shares the remarkable view and is surrounded by comfortable lounge chairs for those wanting to soak up the sun. Our tour led us to the yoga facility which is a thatched roof, opened air room with an incredible view of the countryside and ocean. It is the perfect place to have a private ceremony. We continued to the spa, which is just steps away from the pool, but feels completely private as it is perched on the hillside just below. There is a waiting lounge with a hot tub for those that want to soak before their treatment. Each individual room in the spa is opened air, yet completely private with not a house in sight. It is truly a zen experience. The spa package includes the choice of 3 treatments from the Spa de Eros menu. We chose the signature massage, volcanic mud wrap and the indonesian soaker tub. The treatments were all completely amazing and the soaker tub with a nice glass of merlot allowed for rosy reflection. The spa visit was complete with a beautiful lunch of prawns, ceviche, chicken, pasta, wine and a tropical fruit smoothie. We truly felt like royalty.

For those looking for a wedding or honeymoon filled with great food, amazing service and a luxurious spa, we highly recommend Los Altos de Eros.

A Day in Playa Grande

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Grandemontage

Costa Rica offers amazing diversity within its relatively small confines. Each location appeals to different couples based on their lifestyle preferences. For couples seeking a relaxing wedding with epic ocean views, Playa Grande is a great choice. Although it is situated just across the estuary from Playa Tamarindo, Playa Grande couldn’t be more different in atmosphere. Both towns are known for their stunning beaches (they actually share the same bay), but there similarities stop there. A stroll through town on a Sunday, which admittedly is a slow day throughout Costa Rica, displayed a culture that is content with the simple things in life. Una Ola is a tidy hotel near the water with several clean, modern rooms and a plunge pool. They offer complimentary bicycles with beverage holders for all there guests. The owners are accomplished surfers and offer a surf camp option for guests looking for the ultimate beach experience. Una Ola’s neighbor, Rip Jack Inn, is a hotel/restaurant with several quaint cabanas. It is the epitome of simplicity; Every room has a bed, a bathroom and a hammock. It seems as though these are the only requirements for life in Playa Grande. While touring the ground, we could hear sounds of people laughing and enjoying their afternoon, so we decided to investigate. We walked up the mahogany stairs to the restaurant where we were surprised to find a panoramic view of the ocean. There were hammocks lining the railing, reggae music playing and a hand full of people casually socializing in the bar. This is one spot we will return to. Our next stop was to Taco Star. They feature typical surfer food (tacos, nachos, hot dogs and beer). Despite its simple cuisine, this spot has a lot of charm. Its motto is  displayed on a hand painted sign. It reads: “Eat, Drink and Relax”.  After grabbing a quick taco, its time to see the main attraction: the beach! Playa Grande is a 2 mile stretch of soft white sands beach. It was low tide when we were exploring and the beach was massive. Unlike its neighbor to the south, a walk on the beach feels rather private. There is a beautiful rock formation towards the north. Several large villas line the beach with private verandas. One thing that sets Playa Grande apart from the rest is that it is a giant Leatherback Sea Turtle nesting ground and the area was deemed a national park several years ago. This insures that Playa Grande will remain the same laid back town for many years to come!

Bringing your Pet with you to Costa Rica.

IMG_3440
We are animal lovers here at Four Winds Weddings & Events. As the owners of two Golden Retrievers, we understand that pets play a very important role in the family. We also know that there is an emerging trend towards families vacationing with their pets. This blog entry will serve as a how to guide for planning a short term trip with your pet in Costa Rica.

kennelFlying with your Pet

Its quite easy to fly to Costa Rica and back to the United States. Unlike other countries, Costa Rica has no dog or cat quarantine period. This makes it a very ideal place to travel with a pet. There are two major airlines in the United States that allow pets to fly in the cabin and cargo internationally.  In order for you pet to be eligible to go through customs once in Costa Rica, the pet must be current on its rabies vaccinations and must have received its last vaccination at least 30 days prior to entering the country. Also, you must obtain a Certificate of Good Health from your veterinarian in the united states. (note- your vet needs the address in which you will be staying in Costa Rica). The crate must be large enough for your pet to stand up and it must have a rail that allows for easy lifting. Airlines also require that you feed your animal 3 hours in advance to flying.

  • American Airlines has flight service into San Jose and Liberia, Costa Rica. They charge $150 per dog each way.
  • Continental Airlines also has flight service to San Jose and Liberia international airport. They charge around $175 per dog each way.

Finding Pet Friendly Accommodations.

Costa Rica, in general, is a pet friendly country. There are several ways to locate places that allow pets without having to call and ask each individual accommodation option.

craigslistscreenshotCraigslist Costa Rica is a great resource for people with pets. It allows you to narrow your search to listing that only allow animals

  • Make sure that you give yourself several months to research the locations that you would like to travel to. Traveling with pets requires a good amount of prior planning.
  • Check Craigslist daily for new updates as they happen quite frequently
  • Craigslist Costa Rica is not divided into regions because it doesn’t have the same kind of user submissions present in the States. In order to find houses in a specific area, you must type in the town in the “search for” section. The nice thing about craigslist is that it turns links that you have already clicked on purple, so you don’t revisit the same link twice.

homeaway1Home Away is another really useful resource when looking for accommodations in Costa Rica. This site is comprised of vacation rental properties from all around the world. It is quite handy, because it has a calendar that displays the dates in which the home is available. I find that this is a helpful tool when negotiating a price with the owner. If the schedule is all clear, then you have more negotiating power.

  • You can narrow your search for a number of special preferences. To do this, click advanced, scroll down and select your criteria.
  • Home Away is organized quite a bit better than craigslist. You can search by regions of the country.

Traveling Within Costa Rica with a Pet

Although Costa Rica is an animal friendly country, taxis, shuttles and busses tend not to be as embracing of your four legged friend. The best way to go is to rent a car. This is where the process gets a little strategical.  I would recommend having someone stay with the animal while a “family representative” goes to the rental desk at the airport.

  • Make sure that you print out your rental invoice from home and bring it to the rental desk with you. This prevents the rental car agent from charging you whatever he feels like
  • I would highly recommend renting a GPS. They typically cost an additional $8-10 per day and are well worth it.
  • Have the “family representative” take the shuttle to the rental location (usually a 2 minute drive from the airport) and return to the airport to pick up the rest of the family and pet.
  • If you don’t need a rental car for you entire stay, many rental companies offer one way rentals that you can return at your destination.

If you follow these steps, you can enjoy your vacation with the addition of your pet. Good luck and safe travels!
