DIY Pinwheels!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Pinwheels… We know about them, we all loved them when we were children, but, since our youth, when have we really had them around to enjoy for their whimsical wind powered mechanics? Sadly, I can not think of the last time pinwheels have been in my life, that is until last weeks wedding reception.

One of our destination brides from Boston packed an assortment of her favorite paper prints so that she was ready to quickly assemble her DIY pinwheels when she arrived. All of her guests ended up loving them… And why not? They are affordable, funky, perfectly chic decor accents that brides can easily design and assemble themselves!

Pinwheel Instructions ~

1. Begin with a square of paper.

2. Fold your square, corner to corner, then unfold.

3. Make a pencil mark about 1/3 of the way from the center.

4. Cut along fold lines. Stop at your pencil mark.

5. Bring every other point to the center and stick a pin through all four points

6. The head of the pin forms the hub of the wheel.

7. Turn your pinwheel over – make sure the pin pokes through the exact center.

8. Roll the pin around in little circles to enlarge the hole a little.  This guarantees your pinwheel  will spin freely.

9. Stick the pin into a thin dowel.

{DIY} Photo Booth Love

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

There is no question that having a photo booth at your wedding is a great idea. In fact, its downright trendy, but what value would you place on the rental of this archaic Polaroid device. Yes, we believe that nostalgia is worth something, but is it worth $1500 for one day? Yeah… we didn’t think so. If you are a little crafty and a little techy, you can create your own automated wedding photo booth for little to no money.  The only requirements are a laptop, a photo printer and a creative backdrop.

If you own a Macbook, you won’t even need to use an external camera. Also, since the computer comes preloaded with Photo Booth, one option is to simply use this software to compose the images. The route that we would recommend is to check out the enhanced Photo Booth software created by David Cline. Here is a link to his blog: <sevenEightcline. What David has done is automated the process so that guests are prompted to type in their own name, which is then stored in a pre-assigned file on your computer. He has also re-oriented the photos so that they are aligned vertically like traditional photo booth pictures. If you own a computer that runs Windows, check out SeeMonkey. This software does essentially the same thing as the Photo Booth program on the Mac. The only difference…it costs $150 for the software.

If you are looking for higher quality images, there are two routes that you can take. If you have a DSLR camera, you can use your own equipment and with the addition of a wireless remote, you can capture images without the need of a photographer. Another option is to ask your photographer to set up a photo booth inspired area at your wedding. Your photographer will be able to adjust the lighting properly so that everything looks just right.  Don’t forget to get creative with the backdrop and make sure to bring some props for people to use. Here are some examples of professional photo booths.

Love Nest

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Now that spring equinox has arrived we can all start thinking about our favorite things relating to spring! If you are like me, the lovely sight of pussy willows popping their heads after a long year of dormancy and the wildly excited bird sounds that gets me ready for the season. There are so many things about this fresh season of new beginnings that can inspire a person, or perhaps a wedding theme.  Why not take full advantage of the charm that this season has to offer by using the colors and quintessential elements of spring as inspiration for your wedding design?

Robin’s egg blue, creamy white, and field green is a lovely palette for a fresh and sophisticate spring wedding.  One could incorporate elements such as a robins egg nests gift set and a matching blue save the date card or invitation. Because the list of possibilities are endless for spring inspired weddings, we have included just a few of the ideas we love.  Best of all, they are all DIY ideas!  Spend a rainy Saturday creating these in the comfort of your own little love nest with your fiance.

Robin’s Egg Gift Set

To create a robin’s egg gift set, all you will need is nests, such as these natural looking ones found at Williams-Sanoma. Fill the nests with either soaps, fashioned to look like robin’s eggs, or delicious robin’s egg shaped truffles. For a great decor accent and to cary the theme into your reception room, place these lovely guests gifts at each of their table settings directly on the plate!

Personalized Save The Date

To create a Save the Date card that incorporates both, your wedding colors and your engagement ring, you can make a design similar to this one pictured above, by photographer Jean Tsai. All you will need is a piece of paper to create the background color you desire, add hand made wooden domino pieces found on Etsy, insert your sparkling new engagement ring and VOILA… picture perfect!

For extra style points don’t forget to throw in a bird cage veil and a cake adorned with the flower that screams spring, crocus

Add A Touch Of Spring {DIY}

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

These wedding favors are very affordable, absolutely adorable and perfect for adding a touch of spring into your event!

When you hear the words “Washington” and “flowers” used in the same sentence, many of you may automatically (and fittingly) envision the tulip bloom. This powerful, yet simple bloom has become synonymous with western Washington because of its abundant supply throughout the region’s fertile valleys.  The Skagit Valley, in particular, has so many of these lovely blooms, it stands second only to Holland, for its bulb growth.  And, as many of you already know, Four Winds Weddings & Events owns and operates a floral farm in the Skagit River Valley.  Needless to say, tulips are especially dear to our hearts, this is why we were thrilled when we came across this DIY idea to use tulips as favors for wedding guests. After a little research, I found a grower in our area that offers brides a great deal on a large assortment of bulk bulbs.  Most likely you will find the perfect color blooms to match your wedding color palette.  You can also use white paint to include your initials or spell out your last name.

All you will need for assembling these favors:

  • Paper lunch sacks (open topped gift boxes and tissue would work well also) can be found at Paper Mart
  • Eyelets, ribbon and white paint from your local craft store or Michaels
  • White or clear plastic cups for the bulbs
  • Organic potting soil

A big thank you to Project Wedding for this DIY idea and Mary Swenson for your lovely photos!

DIY Love Mix

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Creating a mix tape is a labor of love and an art form in and of itself. I remember spending long nights trying to cue up my favorite songs in the ultimate order in an effort to win the heart of my middle school crush. Album art was always handmade and usually entailed a collage of featured artists, as well as a cryptic message expressing my inner feelings.

Songs often have the ability to conjure up emotions that we have been trying to express, but can’t find the words to say. Thanks to modern advances in technology, it has now become much easier to make that special mix for the one that you love. We have compiled a list of our favorite love songs for you to share as a gift or maybe dance to on your big day.

Here is some fun album art that I put together. I have attached the pdf LoveMix. Just click and print. There is a trace line in the middle where you need to cut.

Track 1 Canonball by Damien Rice

Track 2 She’s Mine by Brett Dennen

Track 3 Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd by Dave Matthews Band

Track 6 Wonderwall by Ryan Adams

Track 7 The Luckiest by Ben Folds
